Seat of a pagus in Roman times, then a possession of the Byzantine Empire, in the Lombard period the territory was a possession of the abbey of San Colombano di Bobbio. The Franks took over the fall of the Lombard kingdom and their domination left traces in the Carolingian tower that serves as a bell tower for the church of San Martino in the hamlet of Costa. At the end of the early Middle Ages, the territory of Framura became a fiefdom of the Da Passano family, originally from the homonymous locality near Deiva Marina, which left as evidence of some 9th century fortifications.
