Designing the Ocotillo Two Way Loudspeaker

They tell you that using an off-the-shelf, generic crossover is a fatal rookie mistake. Standard loudspeaker design rules dictate that you must pick your drivers first, measure their raw response in a box, and then calculate a complex, multi-component custom circuit to fix all their flaws. On the Ocotillo project, I decided to flip the playbook completely on its head and design a high-end monitor entirely backward. By locking in a high-value, fixed ERSE X02W-2K 2000Hz crossover board at the absolute start of the project, I treated the 2kHz junction as a fixed physical boundary. Instead of adding corrective electronics, I hand-curated a hyper-specific, narrow palette of world-class drivers that would naturally integrate into that 2nd-order slope without a single Zobel network, notch filter, or BSC circuit in the signal path. The result is a minimalist, ultra-pure two-way system that I would gladly pit against any commercial loudspeaker of the same format and size on the market today. The Ocotillo Blueprint & Technical Architecture: The Crossover Core: ERSE X02W-2K (2000Hz, 2nd-Order Linkwitz-Riley) utilizing an integrated, heavy-duty FR-4 fiberglass PCB and laminated silicon steel iron core inductors for ultra-low DC resistance (DCR) and maximum bass slam. The Extended Mid-Bass: Markaudio Pluvia 7.2 HD. A wide-dispersion 4-inch driver that represents the absolute mechanical sweet spot of the Markaudio lineup. Its ultra-low coil inductance (0.165 mH) keeps the crossover points completely stable, while its dual-suspension progressive spider comfortably handles real bass extension down to the 40Hz range. The Tweeter : Wavecor TW030WA10. An oversized 30mm textile dome dome with a massive 11.5 cm² surface area, a low 750Hz free-air resonance Fs, and featherweight copper-clad aluminum wire (CCAW). Built with near-flawless manufacturing tolerances and world-leading unit-to-unit consistency, its triple-cavity venting delivers an extraordinarily low harmonic distortion floor at 2kHz. The Cabinet: An uncompromising 3/4" solid hardwood monocoque cabinet. Built using wide, pristine single planks with fully mitered 45-degree edges for a completely unbroken, wrap-around continuous wood grain. No glued-up stave seams here. Natural Beauty and Resonance Control Combined: Heavy, natural stone inlays cut directly into the front baffle, creating an acoustically dead, mass-loaded mounting anchor that stops mechanical driver resonance from bleeding into the solid wood. The Service Sled: The entire ERSE module is mounted to a removable service sled, allowing owners to slide the electrical system out for zero-destruction maintenance, component upgrades, or manual L-Pad adjustments.
