This film tells the story of a man who has lived in the wilderness of North Carolina for 50 years, far from modern civilization. Deep in the Appalachian forests lives Joe Hollis, a man who half a century ago decided to build a different life. Over the years, he has learned to live in complete harmony with nature, relying on the environment and its resources. Today, Joe possesses one of the largest collections of Appalachian and Chinese medicinal herbs in the eastern United States, and his knowledge of natural medicine and forest life attracts people from all over the world. In this film, we look at his way of life—a rare example of how a person can exist almost entirely without modern infrastructure. This video uses footage from Peter Santenello's film about Joe Hollis's life in the Appalachian forests.
