What we are experiencing and what Masters of the Universe is overrun by is bathos, a writing device coined in 1727 that is deployed by writers, producers, and creatives who are either embarrassed by their source material or too afraid of sincerity to let a dramatic moment breathe without an escape hatch. Masters of the Universe is just the most recent case of this problem, but the plague on sincerity has been around for over a decade now.
