His spirited rap, delivered with seriousness in his low voice over a heavy bass, was not an imitation of anyone else’s but was entirely his own. Furthermore, his lyrics and rhymes, which shone artistically without compromising Korean grammar, were hip-hop that was both distinctly Korean and absolutely authentically hip-hop. In stark contrast to his first album, his second album, The Vintage (2008), excluded sampling and DJing—methods commonly used in hip-hop—and instead presented hybrid music featuring rapping layered over vintage sounds realized through the real performances of session musicians. However, despite his unyielding experimental spirit, reality was harsh. After temporarily leaving the music scene to make a living, he finally returned to the stage in 2013 with his third album, *Rap*, which combined the strengths of his first and second albums to possess message, melody, style, and trends. He returned with more refined rhymes and rapping, and a more solidified hip-hop spirit. “I’ve never separated the way I live from the music I make” – ‘Don Quixote 2’ He states that hip-hop music is not something to be ‘done,’ but something to be ‘lived.’ Hip-hop is not merely a means to get on stage or as a profession; rather, it stems from a lifestyle where real-life experiences and philosophies naturally emerge into music. Since hip-hop is fundamentally a music of resistance born from scarcity and oppression, self-reflection and a critical awareness regarding society are the absolute basics for a hip-hop musician living the life of hip-hop. “The irresponsible traces of those who fanned the flames of stagnation, and the deceptive appearances of those who are all talk and no substance, you who sang only your own story—worse than trash—rather than offering any criticism” (from the first album, ‘Underground’) “The rotation speed of a world that casts artists out to kill them, I slowed it down a bit and, conversely, made my heart beat faster” (from the third album, ‘OST: One Love’) Thus, P-Type, who constantly turns his eyes and listens to his inner self, the music scene, and this era, and who picks up his pen cautiously yet unhesitatingly while living the life of hip-hop, is a born hip-hop artist. “I woke up this morning, too, with a sentence still inside me” – ‘The Worst Man’ P-Type, who lives hip-hop, has stepped back into the heart of the streets once again. Having recently released his fourth studio album, Street Poetry (2015), it captures the streets of South Korea today, ranging from Gwanghwamun, which holds his childhood memories, to the present day where he lives. While his candid stories about himself and the world are somewhat edgy, P-Type’s signature flowing sentences, which fully utilize the nuances of the Korean language, remain effective. He employs rapping that is sometimes ruthless and sometimes logically coherent, grounded in a boom bap sound (a beat style where the kick and snare drums repeat in a dull and simple manner).
