Publication Year: 1995, Winner of the Han Moo-sook Literary Award *Author Introduction Born in 1931 in Gaepung-gun, Gyeonggi-do, she moved to Seoul with her widowed mother and older brother before entering elementary school. She attended Sookmyung Girls' High School and entered the Department of Korean Language and Literature at Seoul National University, but interrupted her studies due to the Korean War. She married in 1953 and had one son and four daughters. In 1970, her novel The Bare Tree won the long-form novel contest held by *Women's Dong-A*, marking her debut in the literary world at the age of forty. From then until her passing from gallbladder cancer in January 2011, she was continuously active in writing, leaving behind a diverse body of work spanning over 40 years, including approximately 80 short stories and 15 full-length novels, as well as children's stories, essay collections, and short story collections. He received numerous awards, including the Korean Literature Writers Award (1980), the Yi Sang Literature Award (1981), the Republic of Korea Literature Award (1990), the Yi San Literature Award (1991), the JoongAng Cultural Grand Prize (1993), the Hyundai Literature Award (1993), the Dongin Literature Award (1994), the Han Moo-sook Literature Award (1995), the Daesan Literature Award (1997), the Manhae Literature Award (1999), the Inchon Award (2000), the Hwang Sun-won Literature Award (2001), and the Hoam Prize (2006). In 2006, he was awarded an honorary doctorate in literature from Seoul National University. He began his career as a writer to unravel the scars left by a harsh life, but he did not stop there. He pinpointed the hidden inner conflicts that everyone has experienced at least once, and exposed social issues such as the hypocrisy of the middle class and gender equality with his characteristic scathing wit. Nevertheless, the direction his writing ultimately pointed toward was hope and love. His writing confronts life head-on, refusing to turn away from pain and contradictions, yet ultimately preserving warm humanity. His literary world, built layer upon layer solely on truth, represents a life that was fiercely human—and therefore, is longed for.
