The Hidden Pawpaw Trees of Sycamore, Illinois - Pawpaw Grafting

Video shot by Sue Stephens, edited by Austin Cliffe. I demonstrate the three grafts I know and tend to use for pawpaw. The first is a Modified Bark Flap Graft that I learned from a video shared by Cliff England on his Facebook wall - he has since posted a new video here:    • Modified Bark Graft Demonstration - Cliff ...   I make a couple extra unnecessary cuts, he only cuts the outer bark to make the flap and then proceeds to make an angled cut for the other side rather than work the blade down the middle like I do. I will adjust my method accordingly next year. I have still had success doing what I do here. Here is Cliff's website, he is a big name in the Pawpaw community and a great source for scion wood, seeds, seedlings, other tree crops, information, etc. England's Orchard and Nursery http://www.nuttrees.net/ I switch to the Modified Bark Flap Graft halfway through an attempt at a Splice Graft as a way to salvage my work for my first demonstration. If I had started this way intentionally (with larger scion wood) I probably would have made much longer mating cuts. I will try to replicate his method better in a future video, but my graft may still be successful. I then go on to demonstrate a basic Splice Graft and a Whip and Tongue Graft. You will also see some mature pawpaw trees in Sycamore, Illinois and I'll talk a bit about grafting materials, with one final Whip and Tongue graft. I have had some success with these methods but my materials and execution are more on the "DIY" side as opposed to "PRO." Practice makes perfect and good grafting results can be obtained with humble materials / what you have on hand. Timing (late spring with a forecast for about 7 days in the low to mid 80s), cleanliness, sharp tools, steady hands, and a nice long thumb nail will all help you succeed.
