It has been announced that the revision of basic salaries for Self-Defense Force members will be implemented one year ahead of schedule, by 2027. While some reports have referred to this as a "salary increase for Self-Defense Force members," the essence of this review is not simply a pay increase. Until now, the salary system for Self-Defense Force members has been based on that of general public security civil servants, due to its historical origins as the National Police Reserve. As a result, there was a contradiction in the system that did not fully reflect the unique working conditions of the Self-Defense Forces, such as 24-hour readiness and life on bases and ships. This revision will separate the Self-Defense Forces' salary scale from that of general civil servants, thereby properly reevaluating the unique nature of their missions and their readiness as a system. The Self-Defense Forces are tasked with missions that involve self-sacrifice in order to protect the nation and the sovereignty of its people. In other countries, it is common for the military and police to have separate salary systems. This reform is an important step toward creating an environment in which Self-Defense Force members can devote themselves to their duties with pride.
