Medal of Honor Recipient Walks in the Footsteps of Civil War Soldiers

Lives can change in an instant. Edward Byers learned this on a cold night in December 2012 in the mountains of Afghanistan. Charles Gould had a parallel experience in the pre-dawn of April 2, 1865, when he was the first man over the Confederate works during the Breakthrough at Petersburg, on ground the Trust is now working to save. Both men went on to live lives of service, honoring their fellow veterans and the fallen alike. Today, we have an opportunity to honor their shared legacy by saving more than 417 acres where the Petersburg Breakthrough unfolded. Join us in preserving this hallowed land—where courage, sacrifice, and history converged—for future generations to learn from and reflect upon: https://www.battlefields.org/give/sav... The American Battlefield Trust preserves America’s hallowed battlegrounds and educates the public about what happened there and why it matters. We permanently protect these battlefields for future generations as a lasting and tangible memorial to the brave soldiers who fought in the American Revolution, the War of 1812, and the Civil War.
