DDR-Grenze in Hötensleben: 36 Jahre nach dem Mauerfall
Thirty-six years after the fall of the Berlin Wall and 35 years after reunification, reporter Chris Luzio Schönburg visits the Hötensleben border memorial in Saxony-Anhalt. The site is one of the best-preserved GDR border fortifications outside of Berlin – with a screen wall, signal fence, patrol path, and observation tower right on the edge of town. For the people of Hötensleben, the border meant decades of living in the shadow of walls, searchlights, and constant surveillance. Christian Berger from neighboring Schöningen is guiding visitors through the grounds today for the Marienborn German Division Memorial. Contemporary witness Ralph Zeisig from Staßfurt recounts his basic military service as an East German Army (NVA) border guard, which he completed in Hötensleben from 1988 to 1990.
