姫路が軍都！？古地図で歩く９５年前の姫路（姫路城中曲輪編）【まちかどタイムマシン】

This is the second part of a series on walking around Himeji while looking at an old map of Himeji published in 1930, the Nakakuruwa of Himeji Castle. This time, we will tour the Nakakuruwa, inside the inner moat of Himeji Castle. The current Nakakuruwa of Himeji Castle is a special historical site and one of the most popular tourist zones in Japan, but if you look at a pre-war map, you will see a completely different Nakakuruwa than it is today. The areas we are familiar with today, such as Otemae Park, Sannomaru Square, Senhime Peony Garden, Shirotopia Park, the art museum, the fire station, Himeji East High School, Junshin Gakuin, and Kenmei Girls' Academy, were all military land and lined with army facilities. That's right. Himeji was one of the most important army towns in the country, yes, a military city. As a resident of Himeji, I can understand why Otemae Park was part of the parade ground, but it was a surprising fact that army buildings were lined up in a U-shape in Sannomaru Square. When we hear Himeji Castle, we think of the Edo period, but it seems like there's a big gap in the castle's history from the Meiji period through to the prewar period. This time, we're planning to fill that gap. What emerges is a very different image of Himeji and Himeji Castle than you might imagine. We hope you enjoy. Please like, comment, and subscribe!
