Brushing your teeth is just the foundation. Dentist Dennis Hüren recommends interdental brushes to his patients. According to the expert, patients who use these brushes regularly experience a significant reduction in their risk of cavities and periodontitis. THE CORRECT USE OF INTERDENTAL BRUSHES Ideally, teeth should first be roughly cleaned with a toothbrush. Only then should the interdental brush be used. Finally, brush again with a toothbrush and toothpaste. For the second method, dental hygienist Steffi Vennedey advises using the brushes as a preliminary cleaning step while brushing. WHICH INTERDENTAL BRUSH IS THE RIGHT ONE? Interdental brushes should glide easily between the teeth and completely fill the spaces between them. A person may need several different brush sizes. Good to know: 40 percent of the tooth surfaces are located between the teeth, and dental floss is only useful for very narrow spaces. QUALITY DIFFERENCES IN INTERDENTAL BRUSHES? Simple brush sticks are available for as little as €0.01 each. Brushes from the market leader TePe cost €0.62 each. Brush heads start at €1.27 each. A microscope reveals which brush is of the highest quality. With cheaper interdental care products, the tips of the brushes are poorly finished. Such bristles can injure and irritate the gums, potentially leading to gingivitis. In contrast, more elaborate manufacturing processes are evident in the more expensive products. DAILY USE OF INTERDENTAL BRUSHES Interdental brushes typically last about a week. They should be cleaned with water, just like toothbrushes, and then air-dried. This prevents bacteria from accumulating. Studies show that these brushes have a positive effect on plaque removal. And they lead to less severe gum inflammation than using a toothbrush alone. ...
