¿Por qué los coches han ENGORDADO tanto?
An original Volkswagen Golf weighed just over 800 kg. Today, a mid-size compact car approaches 1,500 kg, and an equivalent SUV is dangerously close to two tons. They sell us efficiency and green technology, but the reality is that we're building inefficient "tanks." Physics doesn't understand marketing, and in this video, we're going to dissect, kilo by kilo, why weight is the biggest sin of modern engineering. #cars #automobiles Become a member of this channel to enjoy perks: / @garajehermético The myth of technology versus the scale It's true that current engines are much more efficient, but we're throwing all that technological gain down the drain in terms of weight. If we applied a modern engine to a lightweight chassis from thirty years ago, we'd see fuel consumption of 2 liters per 100 km and amazing agility. However, we've chosen to transform the car into a soundproof bunker and a rolling entertainment center. Breakdown of the Weight Gain: Where Are Those Kilograms? We've analyzed the weight of each "luxury" sold to us as essential, and the total is alarming: Structural Safety and ADAS: To meet current safety standards, pillars have tripled in thickness, and active safety systems (cameras, sensors, radars) have proliferated. This adds approximately 165 kg. Comfort and Insulation: Bituminous insulation and foams to soundproof the cabin add about 50 kg. Thicker laminated glass for wind protection adds another 15 kg. "Spa" Seats: A modern seat with electric motors, ventilation, and massage weighs about 35 kg, compared to 12 kg for an analog one. The excess weight in the front seats is 45 kg. -Gadgets and Aesthetics: Electric tailgates, panoramic glass roofs (which weigh twice as much as sheet metal), and electrical accessories add another 85 kg. -Oversized Wheels: Upgrading from standard wheels to 20-inch wheels adds up to 48 kg of unsprung weight, which is critical for the car's handling. In total, we've loaded the car with over 400 kg of extra weight from components that have little to do with efficient driving. The Power-to-Weight Ratio Trap A Golf GTI Mk2 had a power-to-weight ratio of 6.9 kg/hp. For a modern Golf weighing 1,400 kg to have the same agility, it would need to exceed 200 hp. But since most are limited to 150 hp, engineers have to "trick" physics with complex turbochargers and gear ratios, even though the car remains less agile and tires wear out faster. The Electric Challenge: The Sin of Lithium If combustion engines have grown heavier, electric vehicles are in a league of their own. The low energy density of batteries necessitates carrying 600 or 700 kg packs to achieve reasonable ranges. This extra half-ton of weight affects everything: stiffer chassis, special tires, and much more complex suspensions. A 2,500 kg luxury electric SUV is, by definition, a technical contradiction. Is there hope? All is not lost. There are manufacturers still battling the scales. The Alpine A110 demonstrates that aluminum can work wonders; Mazda analyzes every screw in the MX-5 to save grams; and Suzuki has achieved a miracle with the new Swift, tipping the scales at 915 kg compared to the competition that exceeds 1,200 kg. The conclusion is clear: weight is the biggest enemy of dynamics, fuel consumption, and true sustainability. If we want a future for the automobile, the industry needs to stop looking at infotainment screens and start looking at the scales. As Colin Chapman said, "Take a kilo off me before you give me a horsepower."
