Irish Expat Finds a Sense of Home in Cambodia

SIEM REAP – Smiles and the friendliness of Cambodian people are among the reasons many foreigners appreciate the country, with some deciding to make it their second home. Rachael Eavan from Ireland, an English teacher and content creator, commended the love, respect, and kindness that locals demonstrate toward each other, especially to her as a foreigner. “Coming from the West, there’s quite an individualistic mindset, whereas in Cambodia, there's more of a sense of community and family,” she said. “Whether you're with a group of friends or meeting people for the first time, there's a real sense of connectedness. People look out for each other.” Eavan first arrived in Cambodia in January 2024 and stayed for six months before leaving the country. In July 2025, she realized that Cambodia was where she wanted to settle and live full-time. She creates content about teaching English, travel vlogs, and her experiences of living in Siem Reap province and across the country. She has fallen in love with the province, as well as Khmer culture, cuisine and the country's diverse tourist attractions.
