Uncovering South Carolina’s Secret Death Quarry: Cars, Crimes & Clues Lost for Over 50 Years

Today, I investigated the Green Hole Quarry — a hidden hangout spot dating back to the 1950s, tucked away in Columbia, South Carolina. It’s known for cliff jumping, late-night partying, dumped cars, safes, and a darker history that includes at least five documented deaths. What started as a granite quarry eventually flooded from an underground spring, was abandoned, and later surrounded by apartments and businesses, making access extremely difficult. Myself and Jason Souhrada have been working the missing-person case of Herman Caldwell, a 32-year-old man who vanished in 1982 along with his 1972 Pontiac Grand Prix. We’ve searched countless bodies of water between Columbia and Charleston — the route he was reportedly traveling — with no luck. During Jason’s research into the area, he discovered the Green Hole Quarry, and we immediately knew it was a location we couldn’t ignore. After running remote-control sonar boats across the water, we discovered multiple vehicles piled up beneath one of the cliff walls. Months of planning followed as we worked with Richland County investigators and their dive team to secure access. Once inside, we launched our boats, sent down the underwater Chasing Drone, and had divers inspect each vehicle. None of the cars turned out to be connected to a missing-person case, but we’re incredibly grateful for the support from Richland County — and we’re glad we were able to finally clear this mysterious location from our search list. more info: Caldwell was last seen in Columbia, South Carolina on March 3, 1982. He withdrew $500 from his bank account that day and was driving his black and gray 1972 Pontiac Grand Prix (SC tag GOK 105) toward Charleston to reportedly pay someone money. He was never heard from again, and his car has never been found. Four years earlier, Caldwell had been robbed and beaten in Columbia. He identified one of the attackers, Leroy Nolan, who was later arrested. In the days before Caldwell disappeared, he told his father Nolan was threatening him. He stayed with his parents briefly, but left despite his father urging him not to. In 2004, Nolan and two associates were charged in a separate 1978 double homicide. Investigators hoped Nolan’s arrest might reveal information about Caldwell’s disappearance, but nothing new surfaced before Nolan died in 2010.
