He honorably fulfilled his military duty, was discharged, and now he's back in his village. The dying autumn landscape, tinged with tragedy, and the devastated village, where he hasn't encountered a soul except for one dead dog. That evening, an NKVD patrol took him to the police station, and Umar was sent to Kazakhstan. Only his daughter remained alive there. He returns with her thirteen years later to Checheno-Ingushetia. It's as if a different time has come; portraits of leaders replace one another, but the process of spiritual impoverishment of society continues. Those who perpetrated the atrocities of Stalin's time are still alive. Omar also noticed something else: for new generations, the land has ceased to be their home, even though they speak the same language as he and his daughter, Leyla Badalova. A former front-line soldier and special settler, Omar Badalov tries to restore his fellow countrymen's respect for the land, the memory of their departed ancestors, the present and the past. His search for and return to the cemetery of gravestones and monuments is striking. The filmmakers succeeded in imbuing these scenes with profound symbolism.
