Roadside Eye Tests When Police Opinion Becomes a Driving Ban

Can police revoke your licence at the roadside? The roadside eyesight test requires a driver to read a standard number plate at 20 metres in daylight. Since 2013, the police are able to request urgent, same day DVLA licence revocations if a driver fails the roadside eye-test and the attending officer deems the driver to be unsafe to be on the road. By inference then, the attending officer can also deem that a driver is safe to continue driving. Both are a very subjective decisions to be made by the police officer, especially when one considers that their mere opinion can lead to an instant driving ban. This is particularly disturbing when one also considers that there is no uniformity of testing, or medical/optometric independence and oversight.
