The movie starts with a brief synopsis of the events of the previous three Shrek movies. We then get a glimpse of Shrek's life in Far Far Away; happily married to Fiona, living with their three children. However, despite his contentment, Shrek still feels like something is missing in life. This is when the villain of the film appears: Rumpelstiltskin. He makes a deal with Shrek to get one day of his life back, a day to be chosen by Rumpelstiltskin. Shrek agrees and finds himself in an alternate reality, where he has never been born, and Fiona is still an ogre, living with her father, the king.
