It was perhaps the only instance in which workers—the core of the proletariat, represented by Lenin's supporters—revolted en masse against the Bolsheviks. The uprising, led by former front-line soldiers, was characterized by extreme ferocity on both sides. The "death barges" on which communists and their sympathizers were held captive became a symbol of those events. At the same time, the workers of Izhevsk and Votkinsk remained staunchly loyal to democratic principles until the very last days of the uprising. After the suppression of the uprising, the workers were able to organize an organized retreat from the Red Army and subsequently fought in the White Army units until the very end of the Civil War. This uprising against Soviet power stands out from the general series. We are talking about the Uprising of the workers of the factories of Izhevsk and Votkinsk in the summer and autumn of 1918. Perhaps this is the only case when the Proletariat, with the help of which Lenin and his supporters intended to build a new State, opposed the Bolsheviks in such numbers. It was because of this Uprising that it was distinguished by extreme cruelty and the lack of resort to sides. The summer of 1918. The civil war had just entered its active phase. The mutiny of the Czechoslovak Corps began in Chelyabinsk. In just a couple of months, Soviet power was curtailed in Siberia, the Far East, and the Urals of the Russian North. Entente troops landed in Primorye. And west of the Baltic Sea, Dodona occupied German territory. By the end of the summer of 1918, barely a quarter of the territory of the former Russian Empire remained under the control of the Bolsheviks. Nevertheless, even under these conditions, the Soviet government did not intend to curtail its experiments within the framework of War Communism. Land, industrial enterprises, banks. Free trade in grain was nationalized, the population was banned, and such a policy gradually alienated the Bolsheviks, even their former allies, and even earlier, not only the bourgeoisie, the lacquered and reactionary, as Soviet textbooks wrote, were taken. And everyone who wanted to defend their right to a decent life, including those on whom they relied, broke out throughout Central Russia. Peasant revolts broke out, dissatisfied with the Bolsheviks' food policy, the so-called sub-appropriation system, in Rybinsk, Murom, Yaroslavl, and in the Ryazan province, organized armed uprisings took place, which some workers joined. However, all these uprisings quickly manifested themselves, on the one hand, due to the indecision of the rebels who were counting on the Entente to help us, on the other hand, due to the overwhelming numerical and technical superiority of the Red Army.
