In this episode of Life on the Road, hosts Alphonza Kee and Scott Bollwage sit down with one of the most accomplished junior college basketball coaches in the country, Coach Mike Apple, Head Men's Basketball Coach and Athletic Director at Sandhills Community College in Pinehurst, North Carolina. Coach Apple's story is one of roots, loyalty, and relentless commitment to excellence. A Moore County native, he played college basketball on scholarship at Guilford College before returning home to teach and coach at his hometown Union Pines High School for 13 seasons. He then rebuilt struggling programs at Western Harnett High School and Pinecrest High School, earning ten NCHSAA playoff appearances and five Coach of the Year honors along the way, before taking over the reins at Sandhills Community College in 2011. What happened next was nothing short of extraordinary. In his very first season, Coach Apple led the Flyers to the 2012 NJCAA Division III National Championship. Eight years later, he did it again, guiding a 34-2 team that led the entire nation in scoring at 103.6 points per game to the 2020 national title on an 18-game win streak. Both championships earned him the NJCAA Division III Coach of the Year AND the NABC Junior College Coach of the Year award, the highest honors in the game at his level. But the wins and trophies only tell part of the story. Over his tenure, Coach Apple has developed 35 players who went on to continue their careers at four-year institutions, 23 of them on scholarship. He has won five Region X titles, produced multiple All-Americans, and built The Hangar, Sandhills' home court, into one of the most feared environments in junior college basketball with a 66-9 home record since 2016. In 2018, Coach Apple took on the additional role of Athletic Director at Sandhills, overseeing the entire athletics department while continuing to coach, a testament to the trust and respect the institution has placed in him. In this conversation, Coach Apple gets real about what it takes to build a winning culture from scratch, how he identifies and develops talent that others overlook, what player development truly means beyond the basketball court, and the philosophy that has kept him grounded through decades of coaching at every level.
