“Political Correctness and Higher Education” | Darel E. Paul, Williams College

Darel E. Paul Williams College “What spectacle can be more edifying,” James Madison wrote in 1822, “than that of liberty and learning, each leaning on the other for their mutual and surest support?” It was long and widely understood in America that a certain kind of education is essential to the maintenance of a free society. It is less well understood today, and we are seeing the consequences. This third CCA of the 2020-2021 academic year will consider liberal arts education, its relationship to liberty, and American education today from an interdisciplinary perspective. The College also considers itself a trustee of our Western philosophical and theological inheritance tracing to Athens and Jerusalem, a heritage finding its clearest expression in the American experiment of self-government under law. By training the young in the liberal arts, Hillsdale College prepares students to become leaders worthy of that legacy. By encouraging the scholarship of its faculty, it contributes to the preservation of that legacy for future generations. By publicly defending that legacy, it enlists the aid of other friends of free civilization and thus secures the conditions of its own survival and independence.
