SRC MSME Day 2026 Lunchtime Chat: The Future of Trade and Enterprise

In celebration of United Nations Micro, Small and Medium Enterprise (MSME) Day 2026, the Shridath Ramphal Centre (SRC) hosted a Lunchtime Chat titled “The Future of Trade and Enterprise: Perspectives from Youth-Led Small Businesses.” This recording captures an engaging conversation moderated by Vanessa Mason, SRC Research Assistant, featuring two young Barbadian entrepreneurs: Tyrique Wilson, Founder of Carringtons Rum Cream, and Blessing Olaniyi, Founder of Ayola. The discussion explored the realities of building and growing small businesses in Barbados, with both entrepreneurs sharing candid insights from their entrepreneurial journeys. From launching ventures during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic to overcoming supply chain disruptions, sourcing challenges, and the complexities of scaling a business, the speakers highlighted the resilience, creativity, and determination required to succeed. Key topics discussed include: Lessons from building a small business in Barbados Digital trade and business growth Expanding into regional and global markets Branding, innovation, and social media marketing Overcoming logistics, production, and sourcing challenges Mentorship, confidence, and entrepreneurial success Supporting youth entrepreneurship through policy and partnerships The conversation also examined broader trade and development issues, including the need for stronger intra-regional shipping links, practical business support mechanisms, and strategies for helping young entrepreneurs thrive in an increasingly competitive global marketplace. This event was hosted by the SRC as part of its observance of United Nations MSME Day, officially recognized each year on June 27.
