The Einoshima Coal Mine, which remains on the uninhabited island, was used for a short period of time during the Meiji era, but was incorporated into a fortified area and did not reopen for a long time. It was redeveloped after the war and began in earnest around 1956, with over 1,000 people living on the island at one time. It was suspended due to a power outage in 1962, and reopened in 1964, but encountered an unexpected fault line and closed in March 1967.
