Zweites Leben dank Stammzellspende: Sie hat mich gerettet | reporter
A stem cell donation is often the last chance to save the lives of cancer patients. For a stem cell donation to be successful, the donor and recipient must be genetically very similar. Even within families, only 25% of blood cancer patients find a match. Therefore, it is all the more important that as many people as possible register as donors to increase the chances for people with blood cancer to receive a suitable donation. 🩸 How does a stem cell donation work? What are the potential risks, and how much effort is involved? Svenja wants to find out in this film and accompanies Nicolaj to his #stemcelldonation. 🏥 But whose life is being saved? Donors can only find out after two years. Before that, there is a period of anonymity: This stipulates that there must be no direct contact between donor and recipient for two years after the donation. This period has already ended for Stella and Scarlett. Svenja is present at the emotional, personal meeting when a stem cell donor meets a stem cell recipient. Blood stem cells are needed to form blood. They are precursor cells from which the various blood cells, namely red and white blood cells, as well as platelets, develop. Normally, these stem cells are located in the bone marrow, especially in the iliac crest, sternum, and ribs. The mature cells then leave the bone marrow and enter the bloodstream, where they perform their function of blood cell production. Blood cells have a limited lifespan. Therefore, they are constantly being renewed. When people have leukemia (blood cancer), this renewal of blood cells is disrupted. This results primarily in the production of immature blood cells, which are non-functional. Therefore, these patients often need a stem cell donation to regenerate healthy blood stem cells and thus be able to produce new blood. 💉 Types of stem cell donation: There are two forms of stem cell donation: Blood filtration takes approximately five hours and is used in about 90 percent of cases. And there is bone marrow donation, which is performed under general anesthesia as a surgical procedure in ten percent of cases. 💬 You can find more information here: https://www.dkms.de https://www.zkrd.de http://deutsche-stammzellspenderdatei.de www.stefan-morsch-stiftung.de https://mediacenter.dkms.de/news/anon... https://www.dkms.de/aktiv-werden/spen... https://www.stammzellspenderdatei.de/... 🎞️ Team: Svenja Kellersohn, Maik Arnold, Julia Hombach, Tobias Bindler, Lea Brockmann, Andreas Josef, and Lisa Schöffel 👉 You can also find us here: Twitter: / reporter Facebook: / reporter.offiziell Instagram: / reporter.offiziell Snapchat: / 3246991136 👉 #reporter is part of #funk: YouTube: / funkofficial Instagram: / funk TikTok: / funk Website: http://go.funk.net Experience real stories with us.
