Polymer Clay Dragon Fairy Door Time Lapse, Fairy Door, Art Demo, Polymer Clay Tutorial
When I make a fairy door I always start by making a wood grain cane. Then I slice sections off and sheet it through my pasta machine so it’s a uniform thickness. I like to make templates to get the door shape I like, then I just trim around it using a sharp xacto knife. After I create the fairy door shape and cure it, I add granite colored clay and sculpt the stones around the door. I cure the whole piece together then add coloring and details to the door using acrylic and watercolor paints. At this point I call it a “door blank”. Meaning it’s a blank canvas of sorts ready to decorate. I prep several doors to this stage so when I have a design idea I can just grab a blank and decorate! Once I have a design idea for my fairy door, I start to build! After I make a snake of gold clay, I apply it to the door using translucent liquid sculpey (TLS) as a bonding agent. A brush of mica powder adds more shine. Cured once again to set. A black backer is attached using TLS to bond, and stamps are used for a little texture. One more trip through the oven and it’s really time to roll! I use metal jewelry findings that I’ve collected over the years as focal points, accents, doorknobs, and hinges. Attach with a bit of TLS and guess what? Cured again! Florals are next! For my dragon fairy door I wanted to make some roses! I thought deep reds and purples would look nice, don’t you think?! I like to cure my roses before I add the leaves so there is minimal smooshage (hey, smooshage a technical term 😉). The last step is going to be assembling everything together to complete the project! The last step of making my fairy door is to decorate! I use TLS to attach vines and roses all around the door. I fill in gaps with a little more TLS and cure one last time. Fairy doors look lovely on bookshelves, windowsills, and desks, but I love to mount mine with a bit of poster putty right above a lightswitch. Since polymer clay is waterproof once cured, fairy doors can be placed outdoors, too! Thanks so much for watching, and don't forget to subscribe and follow Wishing Well Workshop all over the place!
