In the Victorian Era, female beauty was not a matter of opinion. It was a system. From the shape of the face to the measurement of the waist, every physical detail was read as a map of a woman’s character, intelligence, and social origin. The science of the time supported it. Physiognomy, popularized by Johann Kaspar Lavater in the 18th century and widely accepted during the Victorian period, claimed that physical features revealed a person’s morality and temperament.
