Many believe that Roman Catholics and Orthodox Christians are practically united, separated only by liturgical nuances, culture, or historical wounds of the past. But when you read their own official documents, the reality is much deeper. In this video, I analyze why the supposed “unity” between Rome and Orthodoxy is not a true doctrinal unity, but rather a diplomatic, cultural, and ecumenical rapprochement. The separation doesn't revolve solely around styles of worship or external traditions, but also around central issues such as the papacy, papal infallibility, the universal jurisdiction of the Bishop of Rome, the Filioque clause, ecclesiology, and other dogmas that remain deeply problematic for communion between the two churches. Are they truly brothers in full unity? Or are we witnessing an aesthetic unity that the internet has romanticized while the doctrinal chasm remains unbroken? In this analysis, we'll see why Rome and Orthodoxy remain separate, what their own documents say, why Vatican I continues to be a huge obstacle for the Orthodox, and why this union that many promote on social media isn't as real as it seems.
