Adding & Subtracting Functions • [10.1] PRE-CALCULUS 12

Learn how to combine functions by adding and subtracting them to create new functions. This video introduces sums and differences of functions from numerical, graphical, and algebraic perspectives. We examine how the outputs (y-values) of two functions can be combined for the same input value, how to determine equations for sum and difference functions, and how to determine their domains. Several examples are worked through in detail, including evaluating sums and differences from tables of values, sketching graphs of combined functions, determining domains, writing equations for unknown functions, and modelling profit in a real-world fundraising context. This lesson emphasizes understanding what function operations mean conceptually and how they can be interpreted graphically, rather than simply applying formulas. See the rest of my videos covering Function Operations concepts:    • ★ Function Operations: Sums, Differences, ...   My instructional approach emphasizes conceptual understanding of and connections between concepts and ideas, rather than just pure memorization. Corresponds to Chapter 10, Section 10.1 in McGraw-Hill's Pre-Calculus 12, but also aligns with any Pre-Calculus course or textbook covering operations on functions.
