Peru Cordillera Blanca backpacking: Trek to Laguna Shallap from Pitec Huascarán National Park - Ancash region, Peru May 2025 Itinerary: Day 1: Pitec to Laguna Shallap Day 2: Laguna Shallap to Pitec 16.24 mi 2480 ft elevation gain. Notes about the map: the map is indicative of the trip itinerary although mileage and moving time cannot be considered as reference as I often deviated from the route for filming and photography; also the moving time on the map includes all stops and breaks during the day as I stopped recording only once camp was setup for each day. Hike / Trek Notes: This was my first backpacking outing of my 2025's trip to Huaraz and the Cordillera Blanca. I thought this overnighter to Laguna Shallap was the perfect first acclimatization camp at high elevation. The trek to laguna Shallap is truly enjoyable. The Quebrada Shallap (high valley) is very beautiful and the laguna Shallap features an amazing green color with the great backdrop of the San Juan and Carhuascancha Nevados. I was also lucky to meet a lot of locals who were gathering the cow herd of the Quebrada for a rodeo. To make the hike even more enjoyable I was accompanied by a couple of friendly local stray dogs. One of them made it all the way up to the laguna and hung around for food until the rain came. The camp night was very soggy with many downpours but I consider myself lucky as I was able to setup camp right before the rain moved in. The return day was sunny, so I had the opportunity to enjoy the views of the laguna and San Juan and Carhuascancha as well as the walk down the Quebrada to meet the afternoon Colectivo to ride back to Huaraz. Great start of my backpacking in the Cordillera Blanca.
