The result is one of the most beautiful and recognizable songs of the 1960s. As someone who comes from a folk and singer-songwriter background, this was one of the first jazz standards I've really tackled. I've always loved bossa nova and the way it blends sophistication with simplicity, and this song has such a beautiful groove and harmonic movement. There's something about the chord progression that communicates a feeling words can't quite capture. I think that's why I connect to the song. Sometimes there are emotions that can't be explained through language alone. You know that look someone gives you—the moment when everything is understood without either person saying a word. That's what this song feels like to me. For this arrangement, I wanted to showcase what's possible with a trio. I'm playing my Yamaha steel-string acoustic guitar, joined by Tom on electric guitar and Dylan Hayden on drums. Without a bass player, I worked to bring out the bass movement on the guitar while keeping the rhythm and melody intact. This is the kind of intimate trio sound I often bring to live performances, and I loved exploring this classic song through that lens.
