Interview Fred Van Lente Fred Van Lente is a six-time New York Times bestselling American comics writer, novelist, and playwright, born in 1972 in Tacoma, Washington. His work ranges across superheroes, comedy, historical fiction, and mystery. He built a long career at Marvel on titles like Incredible Hercules (with Greg Pak), The Amazing Spider-Man, Captain America, and Marvel Zombies, and later earned a Harvey Award nomination for his Archer & Armstrong run at Valiant. He is also known for witty non-fiction graphic novels drawn by Ryan Dunlavey, including Action Philosophers and The Comic Book History of Comics, and for the graphic novel Cowboys & Aliens, adapted into the 2011 film directed by Jon Favreau. He lives in Brooklyn with his wife, playwright Crystal Skillman.
