Newby Hall & Gardens — Ripon, North Yorkshire | Summer 2026 Filmed during a visit with Sisley Garden Tours in summer 2026, this video explores Newby Hall, a fine William & Mary house near Ripon, and its award-winning gardens. Our day began inside the house, home to a remarkable collection of classical statuary and art brought back from the 18th-century Grand Tours — including a celebrated Roman sculpture gallery designed by Robert Adam — followed by a lovely afternoon tea. Filming inside was limited, but I was able to video one especially memorable room: the famous Tapestry Room, hung with its original Gobelins tapestries and preserved virtually unchanged since the 1760s, down to the fittings and furnishings — a rare, unaltered glimpse of 18th-century taste. Afterwards, we enjoyed a guided tour of the gardens led by the head gardener. The gardens are arranged as a series of distinctive garden "rooms," among them the Rose Garden, Sylvia's Garden, the White Garden, the Water Garden, the Rock Garden, the Autumn Garden, and heritage orchards. Newby is also home to the National Collection of Cornus (dogwood) — one of the UK's most extensive, with over 100 specimens begun by the Compton family in 1990 and recognised by Plant Heritage. Our favorite moments included the shaded Rock Garden, recently restored; the rose walk in full summer bloom; and the magnificent double herbaceous borders — at 172 meters among the longest in the country — sweeping down from the house to the River Ure. This is a glimpse rather than a complete tour — a sampling of moments from the day, not every room or border. Consider it an invitation to visit and see the rest for yourself.
