On Thursday, July 2, 2026, the Vatican declared the Society of Saint Pius X (SSPX) schismatic and excommunicated. Not only are the bishops excommunicated, but the priests and faithful as a whole. Confessions and marriages celebrated by SSPX priests are declared invalid. Furthermore, the Vatican promulgated a reconciliation procedure for priests and lay people who wish to return to the conciliar church, a procedure typically used for heretical or schismatic sects. The break is therefore total and unequivocal. It is no longer possible to practice the traditional faith while seeking to live in communion with the conciliar hierarchy.
