However, the lighting bulbs have a useful life, especially in older cars that use incandescent bulbs, so periodic maintenance is required for this system. Let's see in detail how to do this on the Chevette dashboard. First, you need to remove the dashboard by loosening just 1 screw that holds its plastic structure. Removing the speedometer cable can be a little difficult because it is very firmly attached. With the dashboard removed, we go to a bench with good lighting and a cloth to support the dashboard without scratching it. The lighting and indicator lamps are on the back of the panel and to identify which ones are for lighting, just check the front and analyze the position of the illuminated drawings. Apart from the lamps behind the drawings, all the others are for lighting, which in the case of the modern Chevette are 7 T5 model lamps. I recommend changing all of them when doing maintenance because you never know how long an old lamp will last if you left it behind and didn't change it. You can also use lamps with the same T5 socket but in LED and then you can choose the color you prefer for the numbers and pointer just by changing the color of the LEDs. The trick to installing all the lamps correctly and making sure they all work well before even putting them in the car is to test them on the bench. To do this, just apply 12V to one of the sockets already connected to the panel and they will all receive power. Behind each lamp you can see if it is generating light.
