A new type of crime is worrying distribution companies in Brazil. Gangs are recruiting drivers to deceive security systems and divert valuable cargo. In a recent case at the largest distributor in Latin America, located in Hidrolândia, Goiás, a driver entered with an empty truck and left loaded with products valued at approximately R$ 80,000. The cargo never reached its final destination. The police launched an investigation after a complaint from the defrauded company. Using artificial intelligence to analyze more than 200,000 kilometers of Brazilian highways, investigators discovered that the license plate of the truck involved circulated through several states between February and March of this year. Despite the similarities in the vehicles captured by the cameras on the roads – all of the same model – subtle differences indicated that they were different trucks. The identified driver used false documents to register with the company before the theft. Anderson Hugo Henrique Brito was arrested in the Federal District; he possessed a category D driver's license, allowing him to legally drive trucks. The gang recruited drivers facing financial difficulties as part of their criminal strategy. Furthermore, Socorro Bento dos Reis was arrested as the owner of the vehicle used in the crime. Although the truck was seized by the police, the stolen cargo was not recovered. Investigations revealed that the criminals used online freight platforms to lure drivers with fictitious offers.
