The view of the Hotaka mountain range from here, and the emerald green Azusa River flowing below, is one of Kamikochi's most iconic sights. • Taisho Pond This pond was formed overnight in 1915 (Taisho 4) when the Azusa River was dammed by the eruption of Mt. Yake. The reflection of the mountains on the water's surface and the dead trees standing in the water create a fantastical atmosphere. It is particularly known for the beauty of the early morning and the starry night sky. • Myojin Pond Approximately a one-hour walk upstream from Kappa Bridge. Located within the grounds of the Hotaka Shrine Okumiya, the guardian shrine of the Northern Alps, it consists of two ponds, Ichinoike and Ninoike. It boasts exceptionally clear water and is a power spot where a sacred atmosphere permeates the silence (an entrance fee of 500 yen is required). • Tashiro Marshland and Tashiro Pond A marshland that spreads out in the middle of a primeval forest. The view of the Hotaka mountain range across the marshland from here is spectacular, and it is a beautiful place in early summer when the rhododendrons bloom and in autumn when the larch trees turn golden. ⭐️Recommended Hiking Courses For first-time visitors, the following two standard courses are popular. The paths are well-maintained, and you can walk them in comfortable sneakers or light trekking shoes. 1. Taisho Pond to Kappa Bridge Course (One way: approx. 1 hour 10 minutes / approx. 4 km) This is the most popular course, where you get off the bus at "Taisho Pond" on your way there or back and walk along the river and through the forest to Kappa Bridge. You can always see the Hotaka mountain range ahead as you walk. 2. Kappa Bridge to Myojin Pond Course (Round trip: approx. 2 hours to 2.5 hours / approx. 5 km) Recommended for those who want a more challenging walk. You can walk back and forth along the river on both the right bank (with many wooden walkways and passing through the Gakusawa Marsh) and the left bank (flat dirt paths), enjoying the diverse natural scenery. 🚗 Access and "Private Car Restrictions" To protect its beautiful natural environment, private cars are completely prohibited from entering Kamikochi year-round. • If traveling by car: Park your car at the "Sawando Parking Lot" on the Nagano Prefecture side or the "Akandana Parking Lot" on the Gifu Prefecture side, and then transfer to a shuttle bus or taxi to reach Kamikochi. • By train/public transport: From JR Matsumoto Station, take the "Matsumoto Electric Railway Kamikochi Line" to the last stop, Shin-Shimashima Station. From there, transfer to a local bus bound for Kamikochi. During the season, express buses such as the "Sawayaka Shinshu-go" also operate directly to Kamikochi from Tokyo (Shinjuku), Osaka, Nagoya, etc. ⭐️When to Visit and What to Wear Kamikochi is open annually from mid-April (when the park road opens) to November 15th (when the closing ceremony takes place). • Spring (May-June): The contrast between snow-capped mountains and fresh greenery, and the large colonies of Anemone nemorosa are magnificent. • Summer (July-August): With maximum temperatures around 25℃, it's a very cool and perfect summer retreat. • Autumn (Early-Late October): The mountains, including larch trees, turn golden during the autumn foliage season. 【Clothing Tips】 Because of its altitude of 1,500m, temperatures are 5-10℃ lower than in the lowlands, and it gets cold rapidly in the mornings, evenings, and on rainy days. Even in summer, a long-sleeved jacket (fleece or windbreaker) is necessary in the mornings and evenings. Also, mountain weather is unpredictable, so a raincoat (a two-piece set or poncho is recommended for ease of movement), a hat, comfortable walking shoes, and drinks are essential items. ⭐️Gourmet Food and Hot Springs Enjoy local cuisine in between hikes. • Sanzoku-yaki (Bandit-style Grilled Chicken): A Shinshu specialty made with chicken thigh marinated in garlic-flavored sauce and deep-fried.
