Training Day Plus Mission Flight with the vCTF-58.

Another sortie with members of the VCTF-58 Task Force, this time in the F4U Corsair. What started as a training round over the Guam Range later developed into a proper navigation and fighter-search mission over the open ocean. The first part of the flight focused on training work over the range, sharpening formation discipline, weapons employment, and general handling in the Corsair. From there, the mission moved into a different kind of challenge: finding enemy fighters over open water, where situational awareness, navigation, and teamwork become absolutely essential. This was not just about flying around looking for contacts. The sortie involved proper dead reckoning and radio navigation, including the use of the Hayrake system, adding that extra layer of realism that makes these WWII naval operations so interesting. Over the ocean, with very few visual references, small mistakes in heading, timing, or coordination can quickly become big problems, so this kind of mission really forces everybody to stay sharp. That is one of the reasons flying with VCTF-58 is so rewarding. It is not only about combat. It is about learning how to operate the aircraft properly, how to navigate with the tools available for the period, and how to work as part of a section in a way that feels credible and disciplined, while still keeping the whole experience enjoyable.
