Praia de Manaíra - João Pessoa (Pb) - Expedição Brasil de Frente para o Mar - Episódio # 1497
Hello, friends of the Channel: We've arrived at another special stretch of the João Pessoa coastline… and this time our tour is along Manaíra Beach, one of the most urbanized, modern, and bustling areas of the Paraíba capital. But unlike some neighboring beaches that are always crowded with tourists and beach bars, Manaíra has a different vibe. Here, the highlight isn't just swimming in the sea… it's mainly the lifestyle that happens around the beach. Manaíra is located in one of the most valued and developed regions of João Pessoa, between Tambaú and Bessa beaches, practically forming a continuation of the city's coastline. It's the kind of place where the sea meets modern buildings, sophisticated restaurants, cyclists, runners, families strolling, and residents enjoying the quality of life that João Pessoa offers. Right upon arrival, the view of the beachfront avenue immediately catches the eye. The famous Avenida João Maurício runs along the entire beach with a boardwalk, bike path, coconut trees, and a beautiful view of the Atlantic Ocean. It's one of the residents' favorite places to walk, run, cycle, or simply sit on a bench and watch the city's activity. And there's an interesting detail that makes it even more pleasant: in the early morning hours, usually between 5 and 8 am, part of the waterfront is closed to cars. The space practically becomes a huge open-air park. Walkers, runners, cyclists, children, and the elderly take over the avenue in a scene that perfectly illustrates the tranquil and healthy spirit of João Pessoa. The strip of sand in Manaíra is relatively narrow, especially during high tide. At low tide, the scenery changes considerably. Small natural pools appear, the sea becomes calmer, and the beach takes on a more inviting aspect for those who want to relax near the water. The waters usually have very beautiful greenish tones, especially on sunny days during the northeastern summer. The sea is usually calm, with few waves, ideal for families and those who prefer tranquility. Even so, it's always important to pay attention to the water quality reports released by environmental agencies, because some areas near storm drains may have periods when swimming is unsuitable. In fact, Manaíra is a beach much more geared towards contemplation, walking, and urban leisure than spending the whole day in the sea. And perhaps that's exactly why it has won so many admirers. Those seeking tranquility generally like it a lot, because the strip of sand tends to be less crowded than Tambaú and Cabo Branco. Another curious detail is that Manaíra practically has no fixed stalls or kiosks on the sand. There are some vendors circulating, renting chairs and umbrellas, selling coconut water, ice cream, and snacks, but the real focus is on the other side of the avenue. And there, the infrastructure is impressive. The Manaíra beachfront concentrates some of the best-known restaurants, bars, cafes, and gastronomic spaces in João Pessoa. It's practically impossible to walk along the avenue without finding some interesting place to eat. Among the highlights is the sophisticated The W Restaurant, with refined seafood, fish, and meat dishes, as well as a terrace overlooking the sea. The Maré Alta Restaurant is quite popular with those who enjoy variety, barbecue, and hearty meals. Another well-known spot is Villa Gourmet, which brings together various types of cuisine in one place. It offers pizza, pasta, Mexican, Japanese, and Arabic food, hamburgers, poke bowls, regional cuisine… a true gastronomic festival by the sea. And for those who enjoy shopping, Manaíra also houses one of the city's busiest commercial areas: Mag Shopping. In addition to the shops, the location has a complete food court with famous chains and restaurants that are very popular with tourists. During the day, the beach conveys a pleasant feeling of safety and tranquility. At night, the activity on the sand decreases considerably, becoming more concentrated in the bars, restaurants, and around the main avenue. That's why many people prefer to enjoy Manaíra especially in the morning and late afternoon, when the weather is more pleasant and the sunset colors the sky of the capital of Paraíba. And there's also an interesting fact about the name Manaíra. The word has indigenous origins, derived from Tupi, meaning something like "fragrant honey" or "fragrant bee." According to old legends of the region, Manaíra was also the name of a beautiful indigenous woman in love with a European colonizer, living a story of forbidden love that ended in tragedy. As happens in many places in the Northeast, history, legend, and tradition end up mixing and helping to give even more personality to the destination.
