I had no idea Takada Castle in Joetsu, Niigata was on this level. Most people chasing sakura in Japan go straight to Tokyo or Kyot, but they are missing something that feels completely different. Takada Castle is surrounded by nearly 4,000 cherry blossom trees, and when sakura season hits Joetsu, the whole castle grounds turn into something you have to see with your own eyes. When the sun goes down in Joetsu, the cherry blossom trees around the castle are lit up, and the reflection on the water of the moat is something I genuinely was not ready for. Joetsu does this every year during the Takada Castle sakura festival, and the local energy is nothing like a tourist trap.
