It's a trap that traps things like odors. In Japanese, it is called a "water seal" because it uses water to seal in the air. If the water in this trap becomes low for some reason and the seal is broken, the trap becomes ineffective, allowing backflow. This is called a "seal break." This seal break is a problem specific to traps and there are several causes, which we will explain later. A puddle in the toilet is also a trap. What would happen if this water were not there? The role of a trap is to prevent the intrusion (or backflow) of bad odors, toxic gases, insects, etc. Traps also block the sound of water flowing through the pipes. If this trap were not there, the smell would fill the house and insects might be flying around everywhere. In addition, the sound of drainage from someone flushing next door echoing through the pipes can be so disturbing that it is difficult to sleep. Such a life would be unbearable. In other words, it could be said that it is thanks to traps that we are able to live hygienic and comfortable lives. [Trap Types and Features] Traps are broadly divided into three types: pipe traps, belt traps, and drum traps. We will briefly introduce their features here. Pipe Traps They are shaped like a deformed pipe, with S- and P-shaped traps for satellite devices and U-shaped traps for piping systems. They are characterized by their compact size and space-saving design. They also have a "self-cleaning" effect, which cleans the inside of the trap as water drains. This reduces maintenance. Their structure is simple, and they can be easily made by modifying pipes or using fittings. However, compared to other traps, they are more susceptible to seal breaches that render them ineffective. Bel traps are also called one-traps. They are used in drain strainers and urinals. They are easy to maintain because the inside of the trap can be seen by opening the lid. They also require frequent maintenance, so consider them easy to clean. Drum traps are difficult to breach because they can store large amounts of water. However, they are prone to settling, so regular cleaning and other maintenance are required. Each type has its own advantages and disadvantages, so you'll need to choose the right one for your application. As an aside, interceptors, which prevent certain substances from going down the drain, are also a type of trap. For example, hair catchers are used to trap hair in beauty salons, grease traps to trap oil in restaurants, and plaster traps to trap plaster in dentists' offices. When installing a trap, pay attention to the seal depth and double trapping. A shallow seal can lead to seal breakage due to pressure fluctuations in the drain pipe, while a deep seal can restrict flow and cause clogs. The Building Standards Act stipulates that traps must have a minimum seal depth of 50 mm and a maximum of 100 mm. However, commercially available products meet these standards, so you can use them without worrying if they're not modified. Double traps are also regulated by the drainage standards set forth in the Building Standards Act. The reason is that their design, which collects water, restricts flow and makes them more susceptible to clogging. Air between the traps has no way to escape, making it difficult for water to flow. If you hear a bubbling sound when draining, first check to see if you have a double trap. A common example is a combination of a fixture trap and a catch basin trap. This is extremely common. If a trap is already installed, modifying it would be difficult, so try adding an air vent to the catch basin lid or disabling one of the traps. Alternatively, changing the fixture drain to an indirect drain may solve the problem. [Common Problems] There are four main types of problems. The first is clogging. Traps are installed at the expense of flow. Therefore, having one increases the risk of clogging more than not h...
