Does the Russian economy need reform after Putin? The economy appears to be a strength of the Putin system: it adapted to unprecedented sanctions and withstood a dramatic increase in military spending. Andrei Yakovlev and Vasily Burov, who published three articles on necessary economic reforms in The Moscow Times, are convinced that change is necessary. After all, the war with Ukraine would have been impossible without the hyperconcentration of power and resources that allowed Putin to wage war and created a huge reservoir of potential mercenaries in poor regions. What needs to change first after Putin? This is the third discussion in the "Normalization Platform: Returning the Future" series. Articles prepared as part of this project by political scientists, economists, lawyers, and foreign policy experts are published in Novaya Gazeta, The Moscow Times, Re:Russia, and on the website "Country and World." All materials from the project will be compiled on the website "Chto Delat" (What to Do) and in book form. The discussion will feature: Vasily Burov, Director of the consulting firm Estonto Lab; Sergey Guriev, Dean of London Business School; Alexander Libman, Professor at the Free University of Berlin; Andrey Yakovlev, Associate Research Fellow at the Davis Center at Harvard University.
