Route 38 running day

London Bus route 38 runs from Victoria Station to Clapton Ponds in the north of the city, and travels past iconic landmarks, like Hyde Park Corner, Piccadilly Circus, Theatreland and Tottenham Court Road. The London Bus Museum organised running day saw many vintage buses operating the route, including lots of Routemasters - including RM1 and RM5 - and RTs, including RT1 - but probably the "stars" of the show were Peter Hendy's RTW467, and STL2377 dating from the 1930's My record of this splendid day - which happily took place in warm September sunshine - starts at Victoria station, and then from one of my favourite photo spots - atop the Wellington Arch, at Hyde Park Corner, providing views of the buses passing such landmarks as the Lanesborough Hotel (formerly the St. Georges Hospital) and Aspley House, the residence of the Duke of Wellington (whose permission is, of course, needed for access to my photo spot on top of his Arch!) The action then moves to Piccadilly Circus, where the vintages buses compete firstly with a noisy street dancing group, and then some kind of animal rights protest, before moving on to Theatreland - Shaftesbury Avenue, and finally Cambridge Circus.
