What happened to Luc Longley? That’s a question many have asked, especially after he retired in the early 2000’s. The Bulls center went into isolation to his native Australia after injuries ended his career early. He stayed under the radar until Brett Brown asked him to work with a teenage Aron Baynes. That started a relationship with the Australian National Team that continues today but there’s a lot more to the story. Why isn’t Luc Longley in The Last Dance? That is anyone’s guess but his harsh words for Michael Jordan in “Running With the Bulls” might have something to do with it. The documentary’s director says they didn’t have to budget to go to the Outback. Whatever you believe, he is an integral part of Bulls history. Luc Longley Timberwolves was his first team after Minnesota drafted him 7th overall. History was made because Longley was the first Aussie in the league but it’s even more unlikely because he never planned it that way. Longley is 7’2” so he was recruited to play basketball early but a chance encounter with American college scouts put his career into motion. Longley chose New Mexico men’s basketball as his team the next four years and he jumped to the NBA after a stellar senior season. Longley calls his time as a Timberwolf “a living hell.” They were bad on the court and off-court facilities were below average. His game was below average until year 3 when he was traded to the Bulls. In 1995 Michael Jordan came out of his first retirement and Longley became the starting center for a 3-time defending champ.
