The America You Grew Up In Does Not Exist Anymore
900 Americans hold nearly twice as much wealth as 66 million Americans. Worker productivity grew 60 percent. Wages grew 13. The America you grew up in does not exist anymore. Nine hundred Americans hold nearly twice as much wealth as 66 million Americans. That number comes from a congressional report. From 1979 to 2019, worker productivity grew 59.7 percent according to the Economic Policy Institute. The wage increase workers received for that productivity growth was 13.7 percent. A gap of 46 percent. Approximately $9 per hour in lost potential earnings for the typical worker. The lowest-paid workers saw wages grow just 3 percent in 40 years. The top 1 percent saw income grow 160 percent over the same period. Your father could work at a factory in 1975 and earn enough on one income to buy a house, feed a family, take a vacation, and retire with a pension. The same job today, if it still exists, requires two incomes to cover rent on an apartment smaller than the house your parents bought. In 1980, 38 percent of private sector workers had a defined-benefit pension. By 2024, approximately 15 percent. The pension was replaced by the 401k, which was never designed to be a retirement system. The median 401k balance for Americans 55 to 64 is approximately $71,000, generating $400 per month using the standard withdrawal rule. Average rent is $2,100. Average Social Security is $1,907. Combined with $400 from the 401k, that is $2,307 per month total retirement income against $2,100 in housing alone. Since 2010, 150 rural hospitals have closed. More than 2,900 newspapers have shut down since 2005. There are now more Dollar General stores in America than McDonald's Starbucks and Walmart combined. Church membership dropped below 50 percent for the first time in 2020, down from 70 percent in 1999. The US steel industry had over 500,000 jobs in the 1970s, fewer than 142,000 by 2015. Workers displaced from manufacturing saw annual pay drop by an average of $7,900. Employee premiums for family health insurance have risen 23 percent in five years to nearly $6,900. ACA premiums rose from $888 to $1,904 after subsidies expired. Medical debt is the leading cause of bankruptcy. Countries with universal healthcare spend 30 to 50 percent less per person and get better outcomes. Fannie Mae calculated that for housing affordability to return to 2016 levels, prices would need to fall 38 percent, income would need to rise 60 percent, or rates would need to fall to 2.35 percent. First-time homebuyer age rose from 29 in 1980 to 38 today. 77 percent of US households cannot afford a new home. Net international migration was negative for the first time in 2025 with a net loss of approximately 150,000 people. Seven in ten Americans say raising a child is unaffordable. The birth rate is at a historic low. The US may see its first population decline in 2026. The American social contract, a promise of opportunity and security for those who act responsibly, is fundamentally broken according to Demos. Intergenerational mobility has declined. Children are less likely to earn more than their parents. Young men earn 10 cents per dollar less than their fathers did 30 years ago. #AmericaYouGrewUp #DoesNotExistAnymore #MiddleClassGone #PensionEliminated #ProductivityWageGap #401kGamble #RuralHospitalsClosed #NewspapersDying #DollarGeneralAmerica #HealthcareBankruptcy #HousingImpossible #FirstTimeBuyer38 #NetNegativeMigration #BirthRateHistoricLow #SocialContractBroken #900vs66Million #AmericanDreamDead #WorkDoesntPay #GigEconomyExploitation #ClarityNotNostalgia
