Connectology Case - Theme 1: The early power gap
Welcome to another Connectology® Case, through which we explore specific obstacles the Connectologists® have faced when guiding champion clients to their grid goals. This is the first in a five-part series exploring grid connection challenges every data centre developer should know. In this episode, Connectologist® Pete Aston details how temporary DNO connections are catching transmission-scale data centre developers off guard — and why acting early is critical. • DNO connections are underestimated - transmission-scale data centres naturally focus on their main high-voltage connection, but the temporary DNO supply needed for early power is often treated as an afterthought, and that is where the risk lies • Two stages of early power require early planning: construction supplies of around 1MW may take six to 18 months; commissioning power of up to 50MW can take two to four years • A DNO connection can trigger transmission-level assessment — even a distribution-level connection can prompt a capacity review at the grid supply point, drawing in the NESO and the relevant transmission company • Act as soon as a transmission connection is secured — DNO applications for early power should follow immediately, as the process will take longer than expected Recorded: 02 April 2026 Our links: Website: https://roadnighttaylor.co.uk/ Newsletter sign up: https://roadnighttaylor.co.uk/newslet...
