Born from a volcanic eruption, this archipelago comprises four main islands. Oahu, the heart of Hawaii, encompasses the capital, Honolulu, and the world-famous resort of Waikiki Beach. This tourist mecca also boasts unique mountain landscapes sculpted by volcanic activity. This week's "Video Album Mountain" explores the tropical landscape of Oahu, following the volcanic traces etched into the island. Joining us on this journey are members of the Honolulu Korean Mountaineering Club, a group of Korean residents in Honolulu. They moved to Hawaii in their twenties, embracing the American dream, and now in their sixties, they often climb mountains together to recharge their bodies and minds whenever life abroad becomes challenging. While facing the dazzling nature of Hawaii, these individuals, who have never forgotten their homeland's mountains and seas, embark on a trek on Oahu, harboring a longing for their homeland. The group begins their journey on the first day at Hanauma Bay, a beach on Oahu's east coast. Hanauma Bay, with its calm waters, choked by coral, is a treasure trove of marine life and a popular snorkeling spot. The path along the coastal hills, with the azure sea at your feet, is a favorite for locals, casually strolling. It's also a popular backdrop for movies and wedding photos. Everywhere you look, you'll find yourself transported to a beautiful, cinematic scene. A ten-minute drive from Hanauma Bay, the real hike begins at Koolau Ridge. Koolau is a mountain range that stretches along Oahu's east coast like a folding screen. Like most volcanic islands, the path begins gently but steepens as you gain altitude. The rugged mountain path, reminiscent of the group's difficult immigrant life, rewards the hikers with a seascape as expansive as jade silk. The next day, the journey continues to Koko Head. Koko Head, a Jeju Island-like oreum, is a massive, lopsided crater that, despite its 368-meter elevation, is known as a "difficult climb." The group, guiding us along the steep, almost impassable path, climbs together. Upon reaching the summit, they encounter the breathtaking scenery of Oahu and write a letter to their beloved hometown.
