Kin Bentley's Schoenmakerskop

Eight years ago I posted a video on YouTube (it’s still there!) in which I explored the fascinating rock formations along the wild stretch of shoreline just west of the little hamlet of Schoenmakerskop, itself a few dozen miles west of Port Elizabeth. On this occasion I did a similar thing, focusing on a couple of hundreds metres of shoreline from the Sacramento restaurant to the cannon. In calling these rocky outcrops “nature's sculptures”, I seek to illustrate my fascination with the way in which sea and wind have carved out from a cornucopia of rock types a world in which I see faces and figures that are impossible to imagine or make up. Indeed, if you check out my YouTube series, Kin Bentley's Life Lines, you'll see that the drawings my subconscious devised are no more outrageous than what nature itself has contrived over billions of years through the forces of erosion. Picasso and Henry Moore would have had some difficulty dreaming up shapes to match what nature creates here. I initially posted this with backing audio from freely downloadable sources, but these proved not to transfer well to YouTube, so I’ve eradicated all sound. Perhaps put on your favourite Van Morrison or similarly uplifting CD while enjoying these images with a nice cup of real filter coffee!
