Sergei Polunin: Chopiniana (Full Ballet) October 2018 | Contemporary Ballet Les Sylphides

Ballet dancer Sergei Polunin in the contemporary ballet "Chopiniana" performed at Koninklijk theater Carre, Amsteram October 16-18, 2018. Dancers: Sergei Polunin, Katherina Markowskaja; Maxim Chashchegorov, Iliana Werner Choreography: Yuka Oishi This ballet was performed as the opening and closing acts for the 35 minute solo "Sacre", also choreographed by Yuka Oishi. Since there are already many performances of Sacre available (including 3 full performances on my channel), and this is the only performance I have seen of this ballet, I chose to edit the parts together so you could appreciate the piece as one act. ABOUT THE BALLET: This is a modern interpretation of the ballet "Chopiniana", also known as "Les Sylphides", which was the first ballet to simply be about mood and dance. Les Sylphides has no plot but instead consists of several white-clad sylphs dancing in the moonlight with the "poet" or "young man" dressed in white tights and a black tunic. Its original choreography was by Michel Fokine, with Chopin's music orchestrated by Alexander Glazunov. Glazunov had already set some of the music in 1892 as a purely orchestral suite, under the title Chopiniana, Op. 46. In that form, it was introduced to the public in December 1893, conducted by Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov. As Les Sylphides, what we consider the work was premiered by Sergei Diaghilev's Ballets Russes on June 2, 1909 at Théâtre du Châtelet, Paris. The Diaghilev premiere is the most famous, as its soloists were Tamara Karsavina, Vaslav Nijinsky (as the poet, dreamer, or young man), Anna Pavlova, and Alexandra Baldina. [from Wikipedia] The connection between this work and the Ballets Russes and Nijinsky serves as a meaningful opening and closing to Yuka Oishi's "Sacre", which is a modern interpretation of the Rite of Spring ballet and based on the life of Nijinsky.
