🎧 Berchtesgaden Impossible S2F10 – A living witness to history, a rare breed these days – Gerd Bartels from the historic Alpenhof in Hintersee. He's not just an innkeeper, host, and passionate cook – he's part of a family history deeply intertwined with Ramsau, Hintersee, and the entire Berchtesgaden region. His family has farmed this land for generations, long before tourism arrived – and long before the story of World War II intensified and came to an end in this beautiful place. He remembers how Adolf Hitler regularly visited his grandmother for coffee and how he hated having to dress up as a child because the Führer wanted to take propaganda photos with them. On April 21, 1945, the war was lost. Adolf Hitler vacated the Führerbunker in the Reich Chancellery in Berlin and ordered the relocation of his closest command staff to the Alpine Fortress at Obersalzberg in Berchtesgaden, where the final battle was to take place. However, the escape routes from the Berchtesgaden basin were cut off to the north, east, and west by the Allied forces, so the Alpenhof on the Hintersee became their last refuge. Hitler's inner circle took possession of the Alpenhof. A provisional command center was established. Forty-five Nazi officials and their families sought shelter there. He witnessed what is usually only found in history books: the cramped conditions of the final days, the fear, the excesses of the powerful in their downfall—and the suffering of those who had no choice. Stories that would be hard to believe if they hadn't been told by someone who was there. After the war, Gerd Bartels helped rebuild the Alpenhof into what it remains to this day: a place of hospitality, tranquility, and honest cuisine. Together with his wife Inge, he rebuilt the business, and later his sons and grandsons continued the tradition. Even today, at 94, he still stands in the kitchen baking his famous Sachertorte. Gerd Bartels is the oldest living resident of Ramsau – and someone who doesn't romanticize memories, but preserves them. I am delighted that he is our guest today and is sharing his story with us.
