Shoshone Warriors vs. U.S. Cavalry : The Bear River Massacre | An Old West War Crime
In the history of the decades-long war between the United States Government and the Native Tribes, many of the massacres which took place are now remembered as some of the darkest, most regrettable events in American history. But, the largest of these massacres is now often overlooked by mainstream history outlets. In the winter of 1863, as the Civil War raged to the east, U.S. Army Colonel Patrick Connor was charged with leading a contingent of cavalry to the village of Shoshone Chief Sagwitch, situated in Southern Idaho. His orders are to negotiate for the surrender of several Shoshone warriors who are suspected of murder and theft in the area. Sagwitch and his people are not suspected of the crimes, and at first they venture forth from their village in hopes of a fruitful negotiation. But, there was no negotiation to be had. Connor ordered an attack on the village, and what followed would result in the largest massacre of native people by the United States Government in American history.
